The Kakani to Gurje to Shivapuri hike is a scenic one-day trekking adventure on the outskirts of Kathmandu Valley, ideal for nature lovers and casual hikers. Starting from Kakani, a popular hill station known for its panoramic Himalayan mountain views and strawberry farms, the trail winds through lush forests, terraced farmland, and remote hill villages, offering an immersive experience of local rural life.
Hikers pass through Gurje, a quiet settlement surrounded by pristine nature and forest trails, before entering Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, where dense rhododendron and oak forests create a peaceful natural escape. The trail provides stunning views of the Kathmandu Valley, river valleys, and distant Himalayan ranges, combining nature, culture, and adventure in a single-day trek.
This moderate trail is suitable for beginners and offers a refreshing day hike with opportunities to explore local hill villages, experience rural lifestyles, and enjoy panoramic mountain vistas.
Route
- Start Point: Kathmandu

Morning: Kathmandu to Dhulikhel & Trail Start
- Depart early from Kathmandu (~6:30–7:00 AM) and drive about 1 hour to Dhulikhel hill town (1540m).
- Begin the hike from Dhulikhel, ascending through lush forest trails and terraced farmland.
- First stop at Kalikathan Temple, enjoy views of surrounding hills and local villages.
Late Morning: Trail to Kavre Bhanjyang
- Descend gradually to Kavre Bhanjyang, passing through Tamang and Brahman Chhetri villages.
- Observe local village life and traditional terraced farming.
- Opportunity to interact with villagers and learn about rural lifestyles.
Midday: Ascent to Fulbari Danda and Namobuddha
- Continue ascending Fulbari Danda ridge leading to Namobuddha Monastery (1982m).
- Explore the holy Buddhist pilgrimage site and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding hills and Himalayas.
- Take a break for snacks and photography.
Afternoon: Descent to Sankhu Valley & Panauti
- Descend from Namobuddha towards Sankhu valley, walking through forested paths and quiet rural trails.
- Continue to Panauti, an ancient Newari town with holy Hindu temples, offering a cultural and spiritual experience.
- Explore Panauti’s traditional streets, temples, and local life.
Evening: Return to Kathmandu
- Take local transport or taxi back to Kathmandu.
- Arrive by 4:30–5:00 PM, depending on pace.
