The Sankhu to Nagarkot hiking route is a culturally rich and naturally rewarding day hike on the northeastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley. Beginning from the historic Newari town of Sankhu, this trail combines ancient heritage, spiritual sites, and scenic countryside landscapes, making it an ideal escape from the busy city life of Kathmandu.
The journey starts with a short drive to Sankhu (1500m), a traditional Newari settlement known for its old town charm, narrow streets, and preserved architecture. From here, the trail ascends toward the sacred Vajrayogini Temple (1600m), an important Buddhist pilgrimage site dedicated to the tantric goddess Vajrayogini. This spiritual stop adds a unique cultural depth to the hike.
Beyond the temple, the trail continues through peaceful outskirts and hill villages, gradually climbing toward Jarsingpawa (1750m). Along the way, hikers experience authentic village life, terraced farmland, and untouched natural surroundings. The path then leads upward again through Katike village before finally reaching the hill station of Nagarkot (2175m).
Nagarkot is renowned for its breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, especially during sunrise and sunset. On clear days, you can witness stunning views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges stretching across the horizon. The peaceful environment, fresh air, and dramatic landscapes make this hike a perfect blend of culture, nature, and adventure.
