Overview

Bhaktapur Durbar Square – A Living Museum of Malla Glory

1.Bhaktapur Durbar Square Museum (Malla era, 12th–18th centuries)

Explore royal rooms, artifacts, and ceremonial items from the former Malla palace. Offers a window into Kathmandu Valley’s historic kingship and craftsmanship.

2.Nyatapola Temple (Built in 1702 by King Bhupatindra Malla)

Nepal’s tallest pagoda (5 stories, 30 meters) dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi, a tantric goddess. Guarded by iconic stone figures of wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins, and goddesses.

3.Bhairabnath Temple (18th century)

Dedicated to Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva. The temple blends brass metalwork, tiered roofs, and sacred symbolism used during Bisket Jatra chariot pulls.

4.Dattatreya Square (Temple built in 1427 AD)

Named after the trinity god Dattatreya (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva). Nearby is the Peacock Window, a masterpiece of Newar woodcarving, and museums on traditional wood and metal crafts.

5.Pottery Square (Living artisan hub)

See potters shape clay by hand and foot-powered wheels. A great spot to try pottery and purchase unique handmade souvenirs.

6.55-Window Palace (Built in 15th century by King Yaksha Malla, renovated in 17th century)

This iconic palace showcases ornate latticed windows, the Golden Gate, and the Lion Gate, leading to inner courtyards once used by Bhaktapur’s royalty.

7.Taleju Bhawani Temple (16th century)

A sacred site for Hindus, with a towering multi-tiered roof. Although entry is restricted, the outer view and carvings reflect Malla-era devotion and royal worship.

8.Siddha Pokhari (Built in the 15th century)

A serene rectangular pond near the town gate, once used by royals. Ideal for quiet reflection and observing locals feeding fish or relaxing.

9.Handicraft Shopping

Browse lanes filled with Thangka paintings, bronze idols, wooden masks, and Newar jewelry. Each item reflects Bhaktapur’s artisan soul.

Cultural Spotlight: Bisket Jatra (April – Nepali New Year)

An epic nine-day festival featuring:

  • Giant chariots of Bhairav and Bhadrakalipulled by crowds
  • A dramatic 25-meter lingam(pole) erection and symbolic toppling
  • Tantric rituals, dances, tug-of-war, and fire ceremonies
  • Parallel events like Sindoor Jatra(Thimi) and tongue-piercing Jatra (Bode)

Lunch Break – A Taste of Newari Cuisine

UNESCO World Heritage Site | Est. 4th century A.D.
Located on a forested hill above Bhaktapur, Changu Narayan is the oldest known Hindu temple still in use. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it showcases early Lichhavi-period stone carvings and inscriptions.

 Key Attractions:

  • Vishwaroop (8th century): Depiction of Vishnu’s cosmic for
  • Vishnu Vikranta(8th century): Measuring the universe in three strides
  • Vishnu on Garuda(10th century): The deity mounted on his eagle carrier
  • Narasimha: Vishnu’s half-man, half-lion form slaying a demon
  • Stone inscription (464 A.D.): Chronicles of King Manadeva’s rule

The temple complex is a peaceful retreat surrounded by ancient statues, traditional houses, and sweeping views of the valley a perfect end to a day steeped in history.

Itinenary

Morning:
Start your day with a drive from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur Durbar Square (approx. 30–45 minutes). Upon arrival, explore the ancient square filled with temples, palaces, and traditional courtyards. Visit highlights such as the Nyatapola Temple, the 55-Window Palace, and Pottery Square while experiencing the rich Newari culture.

Midday:
After sightseeing, begin your scenic walk towards Changu Narayan Temple. The trail passes through local villages, terraced farmlands, and peaceful countryside. Enjoy the natural surroundings and interact with locals along the way. The hike is easy to moderate and takes around 2–3 hours.

Afternoon:
Reach Changu Narayan and explore the temple परिसर, known for its ancient stone inscriptions, statues, and beautiful wood carvings. Take in the panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley from the hilltop and learn about the historical and religious importance of this sacred site.

Evening:
Drive back to Kathmandu (approx. 30–40 minutes). The day ends with a fulfilling cultural and nature experience, combining heritage exploration with a light countryside hike.
