Overview

The Dhulikhel to Namobuddha and Panauti trek is a scenic and culturally rich one-day hike located on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu Valley. Starting from Dhulikhel (1540m), a historic hill town known for its panoramic views of the Himalayas, the trail climbs through lush forests, terraced farmland, and rural hill villages, offering trekkers an immersive experience of local life and Nepalese culture.

The hike passes through Kalikathan Temple, descends to Kavre Bhanjyang, and ascends Fulbari Danda to reach Namobuddha Monastery (1982m), a holy Buddhist pilgrimage site. From there, the trail descends to Sankhu Valley and continues to the ancient Newari town of Panauti, a sacred site for Hindu pilgrims, known for its temples, traditional architecture, and local festivities.

This moderate trail is suitable for beginners and casual hikers. It combines nature, culture, and spirituality, offering spectacular Himalayan views, forested trails, rural village life, and historical sites, all within a single day.

Itinerary

  • Start Point: Kathmandu
  • Hiking Duration: 7–8 hours

Morning: Kathmandu to Dhulikhel & Trail Start

  • Depart early from Kathmandu (~6:30–7:00 AM) and drive about 1 hour to Dhulikhel hill town (1540m).
  • Begin the hike from Dhulikhel, ascending gradually along forest trails and terraced farmland.
  • First stop at Kalikathan Temple, enjoy views of surrounding hills and Himalayan foothills.

Late Morning: Descent to Kavre Bhanjyang

  • Continue the trail downhill to Kavre Bhanjyang, passing through Tamang and Brahman Chhetri villages.
  • Observe local rural life, traditional terraced farming, and cultural practices.

Midday: Ascent to Fulbari Danda & Namobuddha

  • Hike upward to Fulbari Danda ridge leading to Namobuddha Monastery (1982m), a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site.
  • Explore the monastery, enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges, and take a snack break.

Afternoon: Descent to Sankhu Valley & Panauti

  • Descend from Namobuddha into the Sankhu Valley, walking through quiet forested trails.
  • Continue to Panauti, an ancient Newari town with holy Hindu temples and cultural heritage.
  • Explore Panauti’s traditional streets, temples, and local lifestyle.

Evening: Return to Kathmandu

  • Take local transport from Panauti back to Kathmandu.
  • Arrive in Kathmandu by 4:30–5:00 PM, depending on pace.
