Overview

Dhulikhel to Nagarkot hike is a popular one-day trekking route on the eastern rim of Kathmandu Valley, ideal for both nature enthusiasts and cultural explorers. Starting from the historic hill town of Dhulikhel (1540m), the trail passes through Tamang and Brahman Chhetri villages, offering an authentic glimpse into rural hill life, terraced farmlands, and traditional Nepalese culture.

The trail climbs along Gosaikunda hill ridge, leading to Kanshi Bhanjyang, before ascending to Nagarkot (2175m), a well-known hill town famous for its panoramic Himalayan mountain views, as well as breathtaking sunrise and sunset vistas. Along the way, hikers enjoy pristine nature, community forests, and quiet hill landscapes, making this trek a perfect combination of nature, culture, and scenic beauty in a single day.

This moderate trail is suitable for beginners and casual trekkers, offering a rewarding day hike with opportunities to explore local villages, observe traditional farming, and enjoy some of the best Himalayan viewpoints near Kathmandu.

Morning: Kathmandu to Dhulikhel & Trail Start

  • Depart early from Kathmandu (~6:30–7:00 AM) and drive about 1 hour to Dhulikhel hill town (1540m).
  • Begin hiking from Dhulikhel along Gosaikunda hill ridge, enjoying morning views of terraced farmland and surrounding hills.
  • Pass through Tamang and Brahman Chhetri villages, observing local village life and traditional rural culture.

Late Morning: Gosaikunda Ridge to Kanshi Bhanjyang

  • Continue hiking along the ridge trail.
  • Descend slightly to Kanshi Bhanjyang, a scenic pass surrounded by forests and open meadows.
  • Take short rest and refreshments while enjoying the serene natural surroundings.

Midday: Ascent to Nagarkot

  • Ascend from Kanshi Bhanjyang to Nagarkot (2175m), a popular hill town renowned for panoramic Himalayan views.
  • Spend time enjoying the scenery, taking photographs, and relaxing.
  • Optional lunch/snack break with view of the distant Himalayan ranges.

Afternoon: Explore Nagarkot & Return

  • Explore the hill town of Nagarkot, observing local culture, small villages, and terraced farms.
  • Descend back along the trail to Dhulikhel.
  • Take local transport from Dhulikhel back to Kathmandu.
  • Arrive in Kathmandu by 3:30–4:30 PM, depending on hiking pace.
