Overview

An awe-inspiring site perched on a lush hilltop, Swoyambhu (also known as the Monkey Temple) is one of Nepal’s oldest and most revered religious complexes. Blending Buddhist sanctity and Hindu devotion, it has served as a living place of worship for over two millennia.

History & Legend

  • The name Swoyambhumeans “Self-Manifested” or “Self-Existent One.”
  • According to the Swayambhu Purana, the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake. A lotus grew at its center, and when Manjusridrained the lake, the lotus transformed into a glowing hill—now Swoyambhu.
  • The earliest inscription at the site dates back to 460 A.D., during the reign of King Manadeva.

This legendary site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, cherished for its timeless symbolism, artistry, and spiritual resonance.

What to See

1.The Great Stupa

A massive, whitewashed dome topped by a 13-tiered gilded spire, representing the stages to enlightenment. The all-seeing eyes of Buddha face the four directions, watching over the valley.

2.Prayer Wheels

Hundreds of bronze prayer wheels line the base of the stupa, inscribed with Om Mani Padme Hum. Devotees spin them during circumambulation (kora), reciting mantras for peace.

 3.Shrines & Chaityas

Scattered throughout the complex are mini stupas, statues, and altars—honoring a unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist deities including Tara, Hariti, Ganesh, and Vajradhara.

4.Sakyamuni Buddha Image

Located at the western base, this is Nepal’s largest seated Buddha statue. Though modern, it complements the ancient symbolism of the complex.

5.Manjusri/Saraswati Shrine

Hidden behind the hilltop, this temple honors the deity of wisdom, worshipped as Saraswati by Hindus and Manjusri by Buddhists.

6.Ajima Temple

Dedicated to Ajima, a valley-protecting goddess revered by Newars. A vital stop for those practicing Newar Vajrayana Buddhism.

7.Buddha Park (Ananda Kuti Vihar area)

A landscaped park on the western slope featuring three massive, gilded statues of:

  • Shakyamuni Buddha
  • Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara)– embodiment of compassion
  • Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava)– revered tantric master of the Himalayas

Getting There
